It usually means that either the title was lost or maybe the car was in a flood and needed a new title. I’d dig around a little more before I invest money in the car. Speak to the DMV in your area for more information.

A duplicate title simply means that the original was lost, that’s all. If a salvage title was “washed” through a state without a salvage title it would show up as being re-titled in a different state, not as a duplicate title.

That shouldn’t raise any flags for you. Many people lose their title and when they go to trade the car, apply for a new one. It is very common and nothing at all to worry about.
